Instructions
- Get a notebook, note app, or document — anything you'll use consistently.
- At the end of each day, write down three specific things you're grateful for.
- They must be new each day — no repeats from previous days.
- Be specific: not 'my family' but 'the conversation I had with my sister about her trip.'
- Continue for at least 21 consecutive days.

Why Three Items and Why New
Three is enough to require genuine reflection without being burdensome. The “new each day” rule prevents autopilot — you can’t just list “family, health, job” every day. This forces genuine attention to the day’s specific experiences.
What the Evidence Says
Multiple RCTs support gratitude journaling. Effects are modest but consistent: increased optimism, greater life satisfaction, and in workplace contexts, improved engagement and reduced absenteeism. The 21-day recommendation comes from research on habit formation and the time needed for the scanning behavior to become more automatic.

Gratitude journaling has been tested in multiple RCTs. Emmons & McCullough (2003) found that participants who listed five things they were grateful for weekly showed increased well-being and optimism over 10 weeks. Seligman et al. (2005) found similar effects with daily practice. Effect sizes are modest but reliable, and benefits persist after the formal exercise ends.
